The term "Bariatric" refers of to the treatment of obesity. Bariatric surgery also called weight loss surgery. Weight loss is achieved by reducing the size of the stomach through removal of portion of the stomach or by resecting and re-routing the small intestines to a small stomach pouch (gastric bypass surgery).

Surgery gives long term weight loss, recovery from diabetes, improvement in cardiovascular risk factors And a reduction in mortality of 23% from 40%.

Surgery recommends for obese people with a body mass index of at least BMI of 30 to 35 with significant co morbidities and a BMI with no 35 to 40+ with no co morbidities.

Obesity and overweight are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that present a risk to health.

The WHO definition is

a BMI greater than or equal to 25 is overweight a BMI greater than or equal to 30 is obesity.

BMI=Weight (Kg)/ Height (Meter)

Obesity and overweight are the fifth leading risk for global death. In India more than 25 million people suffering from morbid obesity.

The fundamental cause of obesity and overweight is low physical activity or sedentary life because of modernization, an energy imbalance between calories consumed and calories expended.

An increased intake of energy dense food that are high in fats and an increase in physical inactivity due to the increasing sedentary nature of many forms of works .

But the cause of severe obesity is multi factorial and patho physiology of morbid obesity syndrome is complex and serious medical disorder.

Obesity is a result of some more factors than excess eating or lack of exercise. We should change the lookout for an obese person as a subject of humor. We must get a help of medical science in treating obesity. We can achieve a weight loss with maintaining health.

Obesity and Life

Obesity is a disease which always comes with associated major health problem like.

Cardiovascular disease : this type of disease is the most common among the obese people. Excess body fat which actually makes a person obese is also the main source of blockage of heart arteries and resulting heart disease.

Type 2 Diabetes : Excess intake of many of the regular eatables can lead to diabetes and obesity, simultaneously. A great majority of the suffering diabetic population are also the victims of obesity.

  • Musculoskeletal disorders (especially osteoarthritis, joint pains, sleep disk etc)
  • Some cancer (endometrial, breast, and colon)

The problem resulting from obesity like- polycystic ovarian disease can result to infertility and even sexual dysfunction can be present in association with high body weight in male as well.

Personality Related problems : This is another major concern area in regard to disadvantages of obesity. An obese person generally suffer from a lot psychological factors associated with abnormal body movement , lack of concentration, tiredness and sloppy attitude toward physical exercise and work, lack of energy and initiative etc. and these all separately or taken as a whole affects his personality , attitude and behavior to a large extent.

Obesity also create a social discrimination in social life of obese person, it can ruin the family life or emotional relationship in family or friend. All these problems are giving the significant negative impact on the quality of life of an obese person.
