A sleeve gastrectomy, also called a vertical sleeve gastrectomy , is a newer type of weight – loss surgery.
The new smaller stomach is about the size of a banana. It limits the amount of food you can eat by making you feel full after eating small amount of food.
The procedure is performed laparoscopically and involves stapling the stomach.
It is an effective procedure as a single step surgery.
The stomach secretes a hormone called ghrelin , also known as hunger hormone.
Ghrelin is known to induce obesity and diabetes.
The ghrelin secreting of the stomach is removed in sleeve gastrectomy. Thereby increasing the satiety and reducing the excess hunger and craving for food . At the same time all functioning elements of stomach are preserved hence it is known to have minimum nutritional effects. It can also be used as a first stage procedure in super obese patients.
